The Vienna Town House Committee was formed on June 26 , 2006 to act as stewards of the Dorothy S. Waugh Irrevocable Trust for the Town of Vienna and to facilitate the preservation, maintenance and upkeep of the Vienna Town House.
The Committee will prioritize and oversee any work done to the Vienna Town House and advise the selectmen regarding all purchases and disbursements necessary or desirable.
The Committee has secured the services of Holt & Lachman, Architects and Planners to assist its efforts on three levels. First, to develop a maintenance and preservation plan. This effort will study the building's current condition, repairs, code upgrades, anticipated uses and costs and provide a recommended strategy. Second, to look at improvements and additions. This effort will consider uses such as bathrooms, universal access and storage that will require internal improvements and an addition, and provide a concept design for the addition. Finally, to develop a master plan. This effort will allow the Committee to plan wisely now to avoid precluding later opportunities or wasting resources. If the town seeks to consolidate uses under the Town House roof in the future, it is smart planning and a wise investment to understand the potential for a phased enlargement now.
The Maintainance and Preservation Plan will be led by Alfred Hodson, Principal at Resurgence Engineering and Preservation. Al will prepare a report focused on the existing building, including all accessible spaces, such as attics and crawl spaces. He will work with the Committee to prioritize restoration and upgrades based on economic justification, planning issues, site safety, usage patterns, and environmental issues. Additionally, the availability and timing of funding for this project will be considered, with a possible recommendation for phased construction over several years.
The Planning Process will be led by Denis Lachman, Principal at Holt & Lachman Architects and Planners. There will be several opportunities for the residents of Vienna and other interested persons to express opinions, process information, and influence choices.
- Public Forum #1 - May 9, 2007 at the Community Center - a "listening session" to get an understanding of the community's fears, hopes and aspirations for the potential development of the Vienna Town House and site. This meeting was held on May 9th at the Vienna Community Center. For the results, Click Here.
- Community Design Workshop - September 29, 2007 at the Community Center - the most significant public event in the planning process. This workshop will bring everyone together to "draw their own conclusions" about the future of the Vienna Town House and site. Working in small facilitated teams, participants will produce a conceptual design for the site.
- Public Forum #2 - October 10, 2007 at the Community Center - a chance to review the results of the Community Design Workshop and to identify common themes. The public will have an opportunity to give input on the refinement of the plan.
- Public Forum #3 - November 14, 2007 at the Community Center - an opportunity to look at a plan developed by Holt & Lachman based on the work done in the community workshop and forums and make final revisions. The Final Master Plan will then be designed by Holt and Lachman.
The Committee encourages everyone to be involved in the planning process whenever they can. With your input, we will be able to develop a solid plan for the future of the Vienna Town House.
